Recommended concerts

  • Some concerts that I recommend.
  • Piatti Quartet – I know their performance of Bartok’s 3rd Quartet will be very very good, and I trust them to give good peformances of the other pieces – Sunday 20 May
  • Spira Mirabilis – an unusual classical music orchestra playing Beethoven’s Symphonies 5 and 6 – Friday 25 and Saturday 26 May
  • Jessica Zhu more details to be added shortly
  • Lisa Ueda and Daniele Rinaldo more details to be added shortly
  • Fournier Trio more details to be added shortly – 8 June in Bath, 25 June at Wigmore Hall, London

  • ***** Piatti Quartet at the Conway Hall in Red Lion Square near Holborn Underground Station, London UK

    • Sunday 20 May 2012 at 18:30: Conway Hall Sunday Concerts”
    • £8 (£4 for full-time students)
    • Mendelssohn: Quartet in E flat Op. 44/3
    • Bartok: Quartet No.3
    • Beethoven: Quartet in A minor Op. 132

I know their performance of Bartok’s 3rd Quartet will be very very good – Sunday will be the third time I’ve heard them play it, and from their previous concerts I trust them to give good peformances of the other pieces. And Beethoven’s A minor quartet needs no recommendation.

  • ***** Spira Mirabilis at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank Centre, London UK

    Friday 25 May 2012 at 19:30: Beethoven – Symphony Number 5 in C minor

Saturday 26 May 2012 at 19:30: Beethoven: Symphony Number 6 in F Major (Pastoral)

with a pre-concert talk at 18:15 before the Saturday performance.

According to the South Bank Centre links: “There are opportunities to witness open rehearsals earlier in the day. Details to be announced.” From my experience of their performance of Beethoven’s Symphony Number 3 (Erocia) in 2010 these concerts and the open rehearsals will be unmissable.

I know her performance of Falla’s Fantasia Baetica will be very good – I’ve heard her play it twice, including at the Wigmore Hall, and the rest of her programme is good – I’m particularly looking forward to hearing the pieces by John McCabe

About Colin Bartlett

I'm interested in arts, mathematics, science. Suliram is a partial conflation of the names of three good actors: Ira Aldridge, Anna May Wong, and another. My intention is to use a personal experience of arts to make some points, but without being too "me me me" about it. And to follow Strunk's Elements of Style. Except that I won't always "be definite": I prefer Niels Bohr's precept that you shouldn't write clearer than you think.
